Post-Shade and Shade Posts

Our week of Shade on the Plaza wrapped up with a great concert Friday night! Thanks, Inner City All Stars for the show!

More photos from the week on our Facebook page.

And if you were out of town all week, you can catch Kurt, Brady & Steven’s Corgan Shade structure at Browder Plaza downtown….until Parking Day next month. I hear it’s looking for a permanent home then…

Special thanks to Epic Cones in Deep Ellum for donating a dozen of their dessert cones one dreadfully hot afternoon this week. I know the apple pie was amazing.

And thanks for YOUR support, and thanks to our partners and sponsors Downtown Dallas Inc, Office of Cultural Affairs’ Community Artist Program, ALOFT Hotel, Measured Improvements, Haggar, Corgan and Architecture for Humanity.

1 Week: August 19 SHADE Begins, Aug 23 Finale Concert

August is the final event of our 2013 Season and the first ever week-long build-out of our plaza vision.

Locally designed and built shade structures will be on display all week. This plaza really needs some shade. And if we’re going to buy something permanent some day, we should look no further than our backyard – we have a lot of professional talent here! Or, maybe this display of temporary structures becomes an annual event?!

These folks built the shade pavilions on display throughout the week:

We’ll also add a few sets of movable tables and chairs so you can chat with friends, hold an outdoor staff meeting, or chill with the kids as the shade moves throughout the day. And a little solar-powered kiosk….We’ll be giving away bottled water and renting free kites, but what if it sold coffee and newspapers in the morning, icedtea and icecream in the afternoon…. Can you see it?!

Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday we’ll have food trucks out for lunch. Wouldn’t it be great to have food trucks on the plaza regularly, even just once a week? City Hall is in a bit of a food desert. We employees loooove when food trucks come.

Food Truck schedule

Tues lunch: Cajun Tailgators, Nammi

Wed lunch: Yellowbelly, Cool Haus

Thurs lunch: Nammi, Enticed

Then, the Friday evening concert on the 23rd! Inner City All Stars start at 7:30pm, playing until almost sunset as we celebrate what this plaza has become…. and what it is becoming. After party at the ALOFT Hotel, sponsor of the free bottles of water we’ll be giving away at the kiosk.

Friday evening: Nammi, Yellowbelly, Enticed

Design, Build, >>Your Shade Structure Here<<

One thing the plaza desperately needs is more shade. And we know there are tons of talented artists, builders and architects in Dallas ready to impress with their creativity & craftsmanship. So here’s your chance.

We’re opening the plaza to display original shade structures designed and built in Dallas, from August 19th through the 24th. You can build one yourself or form a team from your design firm or friends. The only stipulations are 1) under 400 sq ft, 2) not attached to the plaza in any way, 3) wind and rain resistant, since it’ll be on display for a week.

Anyone interested in designing and building a shade structure can apply by sending an email to amanda[at]revolutionarypants.org

Storm Cancels Jazz on July 26th. See August 23rd

We’re officially calling it a draw with the rain this week. Last week we waited it out and it was beautiful!! This week, it looks like we’ll be getting another dose of storms just as we’d be ready to get started tonight.

So put your picnic back in the fridge and your blanket back in the closet…..until August 23rd. That’ll be our last outdoor evening concert of the season! More details to come – we look forward to seeing you there!

Jazz in July I…II…..III This Friday!

Jazz in July III Poster - smaller

Our mild July weather has made for 2 especially-pleasant evenings of Jazz. We have one more to go this season! Did you know that the City Hall Plaza has a big grove of shade trees and a stepped, half-circle ‘stage’? It’s perfect for a evening of good music good friends, and meeting new ones.

5:30     Setting up*

7-8pm      Yells at Eels

* Note the conspicuous absence of a beer garden this week – it wasn’t hugely popular, but it’s hugely expensive! And the music sounds great with or without it.

Photos from the first two events are on our Facebook page.

Here’s a snippet of what we enjoyed last week from Jack Don Loe.

See you Friday!

And, as the poster says, if you’d like be a part of making our plaza a pleasant place like this every day, join us next Tuesday the 30th at high noon in the L1FN-A conference room of City Hall where we’ll be getting down to business. We have one more event this season coming up in August, where our new council members get to see Living Plaza for the first time!
